To be prepared is to embrace uncertainty which doesn’t happen overnight…

After I shared my job loss story, I was surprised at how many people reached out with questions. From those on the fence about launching a side hustle, to people navigating their own lay off with a desire to focus on their passions, and of course, people seeking courage while bracing for potential job loss–the range of stories, thank yous, and budding connections really touched me.
It was a poignant reminder that no matter how relentlessly the world changes, there is still a resilient thread of hope in the fabric of our networks.

When I think about how I created options for myself amidst the rigor of day jobs, I wound up with a list of 38 experiences, training, ideas, and decisions spanning the last 5 years. Don’t worry, I won’t bore you with that entire list.
Instead, I managed to distill it to 3 key habits that ultimately prepared me to lose my job.
